People of the book

There’s a new little addition outside church this week: a community book library.

Thanks to a generous gift, and with the help of Robbo and Sean, the library was installed today and is now ready to be filled, shared, and enjoyed. It may seem like a small thing - a little box with a few books in it - but in many ways it represents something much bigger.

Christians have always been people of the Book.

From the earliest days of the church, followers of Jesus have valued words, reading, and the sharing of truth. I was listening recently to John Dickson’s Undeceptions podcast, where he was talking about the way early Christians embraced the use of books - those early codices - and copied the Scriptures so they could be spread far and wide. They wanted ordinary people to have access to God’s word.

That same impulse has continued throughout history. Wherever the gospel has gone, literacy has often followed. Missionaries translated the Bible into local languages, taught people to read, and in doing so often helped lay the foundations for education and wider community flourishing.

Why? Because Christians believe words matter. Truth matters. Reading matters.

So while our little community book library is a simple thing, it sits in that much bigger tradition: sharing good words for the good of our neighbours.

But there’s another reason we’re excited about it. We love Gymea and we want to be a blessing to the community.

You often see little street libraries in neighbourhoods where people are trying to create a sense of connection - where neighbours share books, swap recommendations, and contribute something good to the street. We love that idea.

As a church, we want to be good neighbours. This little library is one small way of saying, “Take something good. Enjoy it. Pass it on.” Maybe you’ll find a novel. Maybe a kids’ book. Maybe something thoughtful to read over a coffee. Maybe even a Bible or some information about church life here. Whatever it is, we hope it’s something that encourages you. And we’d love our church family to join in too. It’s not a huge library - we’re talking room for maybe 20 or 30 books, not a full spring-clean of the rumpus room! So this probably isn’t the place to drop off boxes of books from the garage. But if you’ve got a book or two worth sharing, we’d love for people to contribute and keep the little library alive.

Mostly, though, we hope this becomes another small way we can love our suburb. At Gymea Anglican, we want to be a church that loves Jesus, loves each other, and loves Gymea. This little community library is just one practical expression of that vision.

So next time you’re passing by, stop in and grab a read. You might find a great book.

You might discover something unexpected. And together we might make our corner of Gymea just that little bit warmer, wiser, and more neighbourly.

Acknowledgement Of Country

Gymea Anglican Church acknowledges the triune God, the Creator of heaven and earth and His ownership of all things (Psalm 24:1). We recognise that He gave stewardship of these lands upon which we meet to the First Nations Peoples of this country (Acts 11:26). In His sovereignty, He has allowed other people groups to migrate to these shores. We acknowledge the cultures of our First Nations Peoples and are thankful for the community that we share together now. We pay our respects to Dharawal speaking people who are the traditional custodians of the area now called Gymea, and their elders leaders, both past and present, and those who are rising up to become leaders. We pay our respect to all First Nations People and pray for God’s blessing on all Australians as we seek reconciliation and justice.
