Ash Wednesday Commination
Wed, 22 Feb

This goal of Lent is not for us to spend our lives in sack cloth and ashes but to acknowledge our own brokenness and to turn to the redeemer for grace. This has a bit more gravitas than giving up Facebook or a biscuit with your coffee!

About the event
The Commination Service (from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer) begins with the cursing of all kinds of interesting sins! If that seems over the top these days, maybe that is good. Perhaps we need a reminder that God's concern is for our heart. In his worship song ‘Here I am to Worship’ Tim Hughes sings, “I’ll never know how much it cost, to see my sin upon that cross.” For me this is the essence of the teaching of the 1662 Ash Wednesday service – until we understand God’s hatred of sin, and all He had to overcome to restore us to a right relationship with Him, we will never know how much He loves us. This is the goal of Lent. Not for us to spend our lives in sack cloth and ashes but to acknowledge our own brokenness and to turn to the redeemer for grace. This has a bit more gravitas than giving up Facebook or a biscuit with your coffee. I hope to see you at 6pm this Wednesday (22nd) for our Ash Wednesday Commination service.
